LiveConnections presents a collaborative performance between ensemble39 and students from Friends Select School on April 10 at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. With fresh takes on classical standards and new works by living composers, the musicians present a family-friendly performance that crosses ages, instrumentation and musical styles. The program features works by Prokofiev, Gabriella Smith and Steve Reich, an electronic arrangement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and maybe even a hint of Brazilian samba.
ensemble39 was founded in 2011 by musicians from the Curtis Institute of Music and explores innovative methods of presentation, collaboration and programming. They are joined by the Friends Select Ensemble, a student ensemble that performs music from a wide range of genres, including classical, jazz, blues and popular music. A special set by the Friends Select percussion ensemble culminates a year of exploring diverse percussion traditions.
