"One of the smartest, most dynamic contemporary classical ensembles on the planet"- Chicago Tribune

PHILADELPHIA 04/27/2016 For the sixth and final concert of its eclectic 2015-2016 season, the LiveConnections Presents concert series features Eighth Blackbird on Wednesday, June 8. Having recently won their fourth Grammy for the album Filament, the contemporary ensemble will present a diverse array of pieces, mixing up traditional presentational styles. For example, they will intersperse three emotional movements of David Lang’s memory pieces, each a musical memorial for a friend, throughout the program, rather than in chronological order. The program also includes Murder Ballades by Bryce Dessner and two pieces partially inspired by specific paintings: By-By Huey by Ted Hearne and Cast by Jacob Cooper. The group will also present a composition by Eighth Blackbird member Nathalie Joachim, who was seen by LiveConnections audiences last season with her flute duo Flutronix.

LiveConnections Presents Curator Mary Javian says, "Eighth Blackbird is, without a doubt, the best contemporary music ensemble I have ever heard. They never rest, never stop pushing the envelope. As soon as they finish a project they are looking for more ways to expand their creativity. One of the things that Eighth Blackbird does amazingly well is turn a concert into an immersive experience. They take you on a journey by relating each piece based on the emotional arc of the program rather than presenting pieces in a traditional format, which we’ll experience on the June 8 program with Lang’s memory pieces.”

As part of the relaxed nature of LiveConnections concerts, a dinner menu will be available and the bar open at World Cafe Live during the performance.

ABOUT LIVECONNECTIONS:

LiveConnections inspires learning and builds community through collaborative music-making. In 2008, a team of artists, educators and entrepreneurs founded LiveConnections to address declining music education in Philly schools and tap into the people-connecting power of music. Bridge Sessions, our signature interactive educational programs, blend live performances with hands-on activities, introducing urban students and people with disabilities to diverse musical cultures. Our in-school and after-school residencies provide students with sustained, in-depth music-making experiences. In addition, our innovative LiveConnections Presents concert series features collaborative concerts that cross musical boundaries. We are a nonprofit organization in residence at World Cafe Live.
