LiveConnections Presents Grammy-Winners Eighth Blackbird

The four-time Grammy-winners bring their signature style to Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA 04/27/2016 For the sixth and final concert of its eclectic 2015-2016 season, the LiveConnections Presents concert series features Eighth Blackbird on Wednesday, June 8. Having recently won their fourth Grammy for the album Filament, the contemporary ensemble will present a diverse array of pieces, mixing up traditional presentational styles. For example, they will intersperse three emotional movements of David Lang’s memory pieces, each a musical memorial for a friend, throughout the program, rather than in chronological order. The program also includes Murder Ballades by Bryce Dessner and two pieces partially inspired by specific paintings: By-By Huey by Ted Hearne and Cast by Jacob Cooper. The group will also present a composition by Eighth Blackbird member Nathalie Joachim, who was seen by LiveConnections audiences last season with her flute duo Flutronix. 

LiveConnections Presents Curator Mary Javian says, "Eighth Blackbird is, without a doubt, the best contemporary music ensemble I have ever heard. They never rest, never stop pushing the envelope. As soon as they finish a project they are looking for more ways to expand their creativity. One of the things that Eighth Blackbird does amazingly well is turn a concert into an immersive experience. They take you on a journey by relating each piece based on the emotional arc of the program rather than presenting pieces in a traditional format, which we’ll experience on the June 8 program with Lang’s memory pieces.”

As part of the relaxed nature of LiveConnections concerts, a dinner menu will be available and the bar open at World Cafe Live during the performance.

400+ Philly Kids to Rock Out for All-Day World Cafe Live Festival

January 8, 2018 — On Sunday, February 25, over 400 Philly-area kids will take to the stage at World Cafe Live for an all-day rock concert. The February event is the inaugural Kids Rock Philly: A Benefit For LiveConnections where kids from five regional Schools of Rock will perform in a six hour festival-style concert across both stages at World Cafe Live.

LiveConnections Wins 2018-2019 Barra Award for Exemplary Nonprofits in the Greater Philadelphia Region

December 5, 2017 — The Barra Foundation has announced that LiveConnections is a recipient of a 2018-2019 Barra Award. LiveConnections joins 43 exceptional nonprofit organizations in the Greater Philadelphia region that will each receive $50,000 in grant funding. Barra Awardees are nominated by their peers in the social sector and are then invited to submit an application to the Foundation.

Fifth House Ensemble and Jason Vieaux Join Forces for LiveConnections Concert

December 4, 2017 — LiveConnections’ 2017-18 concert series begins with the unlimited imagination and powerhouse artistry of the Fifth House Ensemble, which joins Grammy-winner Jason Vieaux, “perhaps the most precise and soulful classical guitarist of his generation” (NPR), to perform a one-night only concert including Dan Visconti’s “Living Language”  on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at 7:30PM at World Cafe Live, Philadelphia.

Mount Airy Violin & Bows Partners with LiveConnections to Give the Gift of Music this Season

November 29, 2017 — This holiday season, Mount Airy Violins & Bows is giving the gift of music to Philadelphia youth. The shop has partnered with LiveConnections, the Philly non-profit dedicated to creating unique programs that inspire learning and build community through collaborative music-making, and will donate 5% of their holiday sales to help support LiveConnections’ mission.

LiveConnections Announces 2017-2018 Season of Community Collaboration

September 13, 2017 — Can music build community? This season’s performances provide the opportunity for musicians to create distinctive, boundary-blurring music, often involving new commissions and world premieres, while collaborating with members of the greater Philadelphia community and beyond. Programs include performances by Fifth House Ensemble, Jason Vieaux, VOCES8, Kinan Azmeh, Aizuri Quartet, and more.
