Bridge Session studentsMarch 15, 2013 - We recently uncovered this blast from the past about the very beginning of our Bridge Sessions five years ago. Listen to the story about how we got started.

By Helen Leicht for WXPN in 2008.

It takes a lot to become a working musician, and it's a long road between sitting in a music class listening to a teacher and performing on your own. But the new nonprofit LiveConnections is looking to close that gap. Beginning this spring [2008], LiveConnections took over the World Cafe Live music venue for what they call Bridge Sessions - musical assemblies that break with classroom tradition.

...

David Bradley: "We're looking to figure out how artists can come from their backgrounds and traditions, meet other artists, and by working together - often for the first time - right in front of kids, kind of stimulate this idea of crossing perspectives, of being open to something different from your own experience."

"The real opportunity is to cross boundaries and to break open genres so that young people, who have an immediate affinity for music, can not form silos in their head that 'this instrument belongs here, this musical form belongs there, and I belong in this place and I don't belong there.'"
